Man: I didn't go and look. I was so busy worrying about chemistry. Do you think there's any possibility of me passing for the year if I fail the final?

Long Talks Practice TOEFL Questions

Man: If we look at the night sky carefully, we will see that many of the stars are colored. Some are red, others are yellow and some are even blue. This is also shown when we photograph part of the night sky in color. You can take such a photograph with an ordinary camera so long as it is kept steady. A thirty second exposure is sufficient. Astronomers have been able to classify stars according to color. They have found that blue stars are the largest and red stars the smallest. However there are a few stars which cannot be classified in this way. These are the super-stars. For example, Ryiejol is a super-blue star as big as 40,000 suns and Beetlejuice is a super-star with a size equal to 17,000 suns. Suppose an astronomer observes two stars one brighter than the other. If neither of them is a super-star, he will know immediately that the brighter star is closer. Astronomers have instruments like light-meters which can measure the brightness of a star quite accurately. Once they know the color, the brightness and whether or not it is a super-star, it is possible to measure its distance from the earth.

Narrator: Which of the following kinds of colored stars is not mentioned?

(A) Blue stars
(B) Red stars
(C) Green stars
(D) Yellow stars.

The correct answer is C.

Narrator: How can we successfully use an ordinary camera to photograph the night sky in color?

(A) We can only do it with someone else's help.
(B) We should first use lightmeters to measure the brightness of stars.
(C) We must know beforehand the distance of the stars from the earth.
(D) We need to keep it steady and use a 30-second exposure.

The correct answer is D.

Narrator: How have astronomers been able to classify stars?

(A) According to color.
(B) By careful observation.
(C) According to distance from the earth.
(D) By determining whether or not they are super stars.

The correct answer is D.

Narrator: What kind of star is Bettlejuice?

(A) It is an ordinary star as big as the sun.
(B) It is a super star much bigger than the sun.
(C) It is an ordinary blue star as big as 17000 suns.
(D) It is a super yellow star as big as 40000 suns.

The correct answer is B.

Narrator: Which of the following is NOT neccessary for astronomers to know in order to know the distance between the star and the earth?

(A) The brightness of the star.
(B) The size of the star.
(C) The color of the star.
(D) The knowledge of whether or not it is a super star.

The correct answer is B.
