The purpose of this exercise is to give you practice with coordinators (i.e., independent clause + independent clause), subordinators (i.e., independent clause + dependent clause or dependent clause + independent clause), and transition words (i.e., two separate sentences) in an uncontrolled setting.

All three types of words signal important connections in writing; each calls for a different type of sentence structure, so it is vital that you get an opportunity to practice writing them in an unguided setting. In this exercise, you will see either a coordinating, subordinating, or transition word in a box. In the space below the word, write a sentence which uses the word. In the case of a transition word, you will need to write two separate sentences. Then click on the answer to see a sample sentence using the same word.
